The Uncompahgre Board of Cooperative Educational Services
BOCES, or Boards of Cooperative Educational Services, are public organizations that were created by the Colorado Legislature in 1965 to provide shared educational programs and services to school districts. The Uncompahgre Board of Cooperative Educational Services (UnBOCES) was established in 1994.The UnBOCES is a regional educational service unit designed to provide Special Education services and supporting instructional, administrative, staff, and other services determined by participating member districts. The UnBOCES is located in Ridgway, Colorado and serves five diverse districts in the San Juan Mountains of Southwest Colorado. These districts include Ouray and Ridgway in Ouray County, Telluride and Norwood in San Miguel County, and Naturita, Nucla, and Paradox Valley Charter School in the West End District of Montrose County. Student populations range in size from 220-780 students, depending on the district.

The UnBOCES Staff
West Central Alternative Teacher Licensure Program (ATL)
This program licenses qualified candidates as teachers through a site-based two-year program of training and supervision. Candidates' transcripts are evaluated by the Colorado Dept. of Education (CDE). Candidates must pass a content exam and then seek full-time employment. While participating in the program, each candidate has a professional support team to provide instruction, supervision and performance evaluations while they document 225 clock hours of planned instruction and activities. Upon successful completion of the Alternative Teacher Licensure Training Program, the candidate is eligible for an Initial Teacher License.
